We were facing the Iron Horse for the second time
in two weeks and were hoping for a vast improvement from last week, as we had
the largest squad available to us for some time.
The lads were fired up at the prospect of a final
and got off to a decent start, more than matching the DL5er’s in the first half,
despite playing into a strong wind. There were few chances in the first period
and it wasn’t until the referee awarded a penalty for handball against Paul
Gibson that either keeper had a save to make. The penalty decision was hotly
disputed as the ball appeared to strike Paul on the chest. Our appeals were
waved away and the penalty was blasted high into the top, left hand corner,
giving Henderson no chance.
The mood was good at half-time, despite being
behind and 10 minutes into the second half we equalised after a deep cross from
Michael Condron evaded the Aycliffe defence was controlled by Stephen Hall and
slotted underneath the advancing keeper.
Our goal gave the lads more hope, with our pacy
front two causing problems for the Aycliffe defence and the next major incident
came when Tommy Louden chased a long ball and was clumsily taken out on the edge
of the box by the Aycliffe sweeper. The referee deemed this to have been a
professional foul and brandished a red card, much to the dismay of the player
and his sideline.
Despite being reduced to 10 men, Aycliffe did not
give up attacking and regained the lead when their striker found the bottom
corner of the net.
With time running out we began to exert more
pressure and equalised with 5 minutes to go when Ross Brown looped a header into
to the top, left hand corner over the helpless keeper.
No further goals came and extra time followed.
At full time, confidence was high as it was expected that we could take
advantage of our numerical advantage, however, it was again Aycliffe who took
the lead, following some sloppy Fox defending.
Into the second period of extra time, the game
was over when the ref showed a second yellow card to Lee Robertson and Aycliffe
scored from the resulting free-kick.
The was mass disappointment amongst the lads
afterwards as we felt the game should have been won in normal time – still, we
can now “concentrate on the league” and try to gain our second promotion in
successive seasons.
